BIO

Born 1959 in a small town at the lake Traunsee in Austria, Ernst Heissl Jr discovered his love for art as a young teenager. In the early seventies he created first pencil drawings in the fanastic-realistic style that are followed by works in Indian ink and Acrylic in the early eighties. Graphic elements - such as the subtlety of the stoke and attention to detail in the execution - are the artist’s focus. As a self-taught artist with a substantial inspirational force the artist creates expressive imagery with visionary subject matter and in minute execution: the human in the state of metamorphosis, in an elementary tension between fantasy, fiction and reality.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I discovered my love for graphic art early on as a young child. To the dismay of the cleaning staff, I drew on the school-desks with pencils and crayons, before I ventured into doing my first proper pictures. I drew animals and portraits, then fantasy,- and comic figures. In the 80ies this medium became too powerless for me and I changed to the ink technique, which up until now, I am most fond of. Important for me is attention to detail and the union of reality with fiction. As an autodidact with lots of fantasy I tried to translate my ideas into drawings. To bring some colour into my work the airbrush technique pretty much suggested itself and in the mid-80ies, therefore, I created many pictures that were bursting with colour. With this technique many a time stencils have to be crafted to achieve sharp contours, this also served my graphical core. I studied on my own artworks, fought with blocked nozzles…this is why I don’t spray any white anymore but use an erasing technique for light-effects.
